2019

Southwest Virginia Economics Teacher Conference

July 25-26, 2019
Radford University

ABOUT US

Economics is the science of making tough choices. Understanding the basics of economics is key to becoming an informed and effective citizen. However, it’s a challenge for middle-school and high-school teachers to make economics interesting (particularly if they haven’t studied it in great detail in college) for students.

In this 2-day conference, secondary school educators teaching economics in Southwest Virginia will meet with their peers, explore some of the key topics in economic theory that are essential for students to know before college, and discuss resources and approaches with Radford University economists.

Topics covered include:

  • Scarcity and opportunity cost

  • Decision-making and analytics

  • How markets work

  • Economic growth and entrepreneurship

  • Economic policy

  • Economics in popular culture

  • Globalization and trade

  • Communicating economics

  • Economics controversies

Upon successfully completing both days of activities, participants will receive a certificate of completion. Contact Dr. Tom Duncan at tduncan13@radford.edu for more information or to indicate your interest. Space is limited to 30 participants, first-come-first-served.
